Floating Concepts makes waves with new appointment
Tue 25th Nov 08 - 9:23

Floating Concepts, the UK’s niche waterspace developer has moved one step closer to creating its vision for communities on water with the appointment of Derek Cochrane, B.Sc; F.I.C.E.  to its board.

An expert in water management, Derek will supervise the masterplanning of harbour, port and marina developments for Floating Concepts. With over 30 years of experience, his role will also include feasibility studies, urban design, engineering and environmental management.

Floating Concepts’ CEO, David Beard, said: “We are delighted that Derek has agreed to join us.  He will provide a vital link between the new genre of aquatectural ideas that we will be promoting for bluefield space in the UK and making their procurement a reality.”

Derek, who has spent most of his career at British Waterways as a main board director responsible for regeneration, will also be a consultant to Floating Concepts’ associated company, Harbourside Marina plc, which operates the 370 berth Liverpool Marina and Bar & Grill and associated facilities.

Commenting on his appointment, Derek added: “Floating Concepts offers a revolutionary development solution to issues of flooding and land shortage and I am really looking forward to helping them be a key player in this new emerging market.”

Floating Concept’s first developments look set to be in the South Docks at Liverpool and at Salford Quays.  Its very first luxury floating live or work unit is being imported from Denmark and is expected to arrive in Liverpool in early December 2008.

“There are plenty of opportunities out there, but we are trying to concentrate our attention on locations with forward looking planning authorities who can appreciate just what a powerful regenerative influence our developments can be in these difficult economic times. The south coast and London Docklands are also of particular interest to us,” added David Beard.
