Pitt Calls for flood planning boost

Sir Michael Pitt has warned local authorities that they must invest more in skills for planners to cope with the increased pressures of flood risk.

Speaking at the Environment Agency's annual conference in central London, Pitt, whose report on the devastating floods of 2007 was published in June, said that more cash and training must be given to planners.
 
He said: "Local authorities have to deal with planning for floods in a much more focused
way.
 
"They have to upskill their staff and give the resources to deal with the situation."
 
The government, through Defra, will publish its response to the Pitt review in late November, it confirmed at the Local Government Flood Forum earlier this month.
